Summary

This week on the Active Self Protection Podcast we sit down with domestic violence survivor Lisa and discuss many of the misperceptions about DV and the mentality of someone who is gradually groomed and gaslit into becoming the person who sticks around when everyone else says they should leave and we try to give hope that even the worst situation can be improved.  Active Self Protection exists to help good, sane, sober, moral, prudent people in all walks of life to more effectively protect themselves and their loved ones from criminal violence. On the ASP Podcast you will hear the true stories of life or death self defense encounters from the men and women that lived them. If you are interested in the Second Amendment, self defense and defensive firearms use, martial arts or the use of less lethal tools used in the real world to defend life and family, you will find this show riveting.  Join host and career federal agent Mike Willever as he talks to real life survivors and hear their stories in depth. You'll hear about these incidents and the self defenders from well before the encounter occurred on through the legal and emotional aftermath. Music: bensound.com

She is in the Portland, Oregon area,

PAC West Defense. Lisa, how are you?

0:38.7

Good. Thanks. How are you?

0:42.6

I'm well. Thank you so much. I appreciate you coming on, as I say every time.

0:48.6

If it weren't for people like you, I wouldn't have a show. It would just be me talking for an hour and nobody would watch that, I'm afraid.

0:49.9

So thank you very much.

0:57.2

So your story revolves, the story you're going to tell today revolves largely around domestic violence.

1:12.6

Domestic violence is one of those things where I think there's a lot of misunderstanding and misconception about how it works, how the power dynamic works, how and how and why people stay in bad situations after everyone else around them thinks they should have bailed out. There's a lot to uncover it. It's a very sensitive topic.

1:17.0

So if you're listening to this and you have that in your history, just I want to give you sort of a

1:22.4

warning ahead of time. That's the main gist of the talk in case you don't want to listen to this,

1:27.1

but I think you probably should keep listening.

1:30.3

So Lisa, tell us, you're now in the self-defense world, you know, the kind of circles that me and John and Steph run in.

1:39.9

When all this stuff was going on in your past, I take it this was all.

1:43.9

None of that stuff was going on. You weren't a self-defense oriented person or a firearms instructor. That's correct. That came much, much later. Okay, so talk to us about these situations. I mean, you start with anything you want to start with. I'm going to let you kind of have free reign here. I don't have a script. I don't do a lot of pre-interview. So, um, kind of walk us through the earliest

2:05.8

things that went on and kind of how that went for you. Okay. Um, well, I guess the easiest thing for me

2:13.4

is just to lay out like a, a quick 10 second overview of everything and then

2:17.6

kind of go back chronologically.
