Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Thursday, February 20th. Despite the Trump

administration and Elon Musk, insisting that the federal workforce purge is only impacting

low-performing and non-critical employees, in many cases the exact opposite is happening. That's according

to more than a dozen interviews with recently laid

off federal workers, plus documents obtained by CNN. They say that people who've been recently

promoted or received strong performance reviews are among those who've lost their job.

That's fueled widespread criticism from officials who believe the Trump administration is using

probationary status, as well as agency performance standards, to fire thousands of federal

workers.

And some of those people have highly specialized roles in cybersecurity, oversee U.S. nuclear

weapons, and even maintain the country's critical infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration's legal challenges are continuing to grow.

It's now being sued by Catholic bishops over the sudden halt to refugee resettlement funding.

The lawsuit was filed by the US Conference of Catholic

Bishops. They're one of the national agencies left scrambling after a State Department letter

last month told them that foreign aid funding was being suspended. But the conference argues

they're a domestic program because they help refugees who arrive in the US legally after being
