Summary

Some cessationists (those who believe that the gifts of the Spirit are not for today) will say that 1 Corinthians 13:10-12 teaches that after the Bible was fully delivered to the church we no longer expect to see the gifts of the Spirit operating. While I think cessationists can give us valuable insights I think this particular passage is used wrongly when they use it to support cessationism. I'll be giving an analysis of 1 Cor 13:10-12 and interacting with the views of some cessationists. I want to point out that there are plenty of cessationists who are with me on this passage and say not to use it in support of their position. So don't consider this a debunking of all cessationism but merely a refutation of a misuse of 1 Cor 13. Here's the article I referenced from the Master's Seminary https://www.tms.edu/m/tmsj14g.pdf If you love this ministry and want to help support me continuing to make free content then please click here. https://biblethinker.org/index.php/donate If you want your own "BibleThinker" coffee mug then click here (and be sure to read the page for instructions of shipping discounts and details) https://www.zockollpottery.com/product-page/bible-thinker-mug I often get asked about what Bible software I use. It's called Logos and you can get it at the link below. There is a free version which you will find helpful. The nicer versions are a serious investment but I've found it to be really integral in my own Bible studies. I also have a 10% discount for you if you use the coupon code BIBLETHINKER8 when you make your purchase. This is an affiliate link but I only recommend it because it really is an incredibly useful software I have used for 13 years and because I can get you a discount with this link. https://www.logos.com/partner/biblethinker?utm_source=biblethinker&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=promo-partner

Welcome.

Hey guys, today we're going to talk about 1st Corinthians 13 and

0:13.9

cessationism. Let me tell you exactly what I mean. The big question today is

0:18.4

this. Does the Bible teach that tongues as a spiritual gift prophecy and knowledge as spiritual

0:25.6

gifts that they have ceased after the apostles left the scene and the church

0:29.7

received the completed Bible. Does this particular passage we're going to go over today? Does it

0:35.0

teach that? This is actually the biggest go-to passage in the debate between

0:40.1

cessationism and continuationism and we're going to try to unpack it a bit today in the

0:45.0

Tuesday live stream. Welcome, I'm Pastor Mike Winger. I do this every Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Pacific time and we do theology apologetics and talking about the Christian life as well and I'm hoping

0:56.3

that what I do will equip you to think biblically about everything.

I just want you to think of me as an authority who tells you what to think about these passages.

1:03.7

Rather, I want to give you some things to think about so you can think about these passages,

1:08.7

if you know what I mean, as well as defense of the Christian faith and all that good stuff but today's very much theology stuff not apologetics as far as we're doing today

1:17.4

If you have any questions you can put them in the in the live chat if you're watching live and I'll answer those at the end, just put a

1:22.8

capital cue so that we'll know that your comment is a question and I'll gather

1:26.7

several of those, can't do all of them, and I'll try to answer them at the end.

1:29.6

So first let's start with some definitions. I say cessationism. What do I mean by that?

1:35.4

Well I looked for a few definitions online prepping for this teaching and one that I liked

1:40.0

I found from Theopedia and it's the following definition. I thought this was pretty good, pretty clear. It was pretty clear for me.
