Summary

You’re not a toaster. No matter what you've been taught by religious leaders, you’re not a thing to be used. No matter what you’ve been told by your husband, you’re not an appliance to be owned. No matter what you’ve come to believe about yourself, you’re not property — at the mercy of a spouse who wants toast on demand. If you've found yourself tormented over how you’re treated in your marriage, especially when it comes to sex, and you waver between disgust and despairing “submission,” I have a new bottom line for you. It's four little letters, and it never justifies your mistreatment. In this episode: - Why using the Bible to justify marital rape is a violation of God’s heart, your value, and marriage - The amount of education I have in this field (and why it doesn’t matter) - What three-year-olds and believing the moon is made of cheese have to do with this issue - Why evolving beliefs are a sign of faith and humility, not sin and arrogance - The reason I’m okay with you completely disagreeing with me (really) Listen or download the transcript at flyingfreenow.com/170 FREE: I'll send you the first chapter of my book, Is It Me? Welcome to episode 170 of the Flying Free Podcast.

Today I want to dive into a question that came up in the Flying Free

0:31.1

Private Forum that had to do with a couple of Bible verses typically used

0:36.2

to manipulate women into having sex when they don't want to.

0:40.3

Doesn't that sound loving? I know, since I want what I want and I want it now and since I'm an

0:47.1

entitled spiritual abuser, I'm going to actually use some randomly selected Bible verses, pull them out of context, ignore the rest of the Bible,

0:56.2

and smack my little wife over the head with these verses to get what I want.

1:01.6

Does that sound like something Jesus would do? I don't think so, but it's exactly

1:06.7

what the devil does. So here's the question that came in. In 1st Corinthians 7-5, it says that couples are not to deprive each other of sex unless

1:16.9

it is for a limited time to fast and pray. And in 1st Peter 3 1 and 2 it says

1:22.0

wives need to submit to their husbands

1:24.2

so that if their husband isn't a Christian,

1:26.2

he will become one when he sees how cooperative his wife is.

1:29.8

So doesn't that mean my husband can take my body even if I don't want him to?

1:37.2

There are women in my forum who have been repeatedly raped by their husbands, including right after childbirth when their body is

1:44.8

still healing, based on their justification from these Bible verses. Now I'm not a theologian and I say that a lot. I say I'm not a

1:57.3

theologian before I you know as a caveat before I go into what I believe in my

2:01.6

faith. We don't have to be theologians to know what we believe

2:05.4

and to be confident about what we believe in, all right? But I also think I sell myself short
