Summary

In a recent Dividing Line program James White once again critiqued Traditionalism (non-Calvinistic Southern Baptists). He began by address an offensive meme which suggested that White (and other Calvinists) believe that God made a man rape a child for His own glory.

This video address the actual Compatibilistic (Calvinistic) arguments in a cordial and thorough manner by looking directly at quotes from James White and other leading Calvinistic scholars (including Calvin himself).

We also listen to the Bible Answer Man program to hear the debate between George Bryson and James White to examine what was actually said verbatim in an attempt to fairly unpack our points of disagreement with those who call themselves Calvinistic Compatibilists.

Welcome your host, the director of apologetics for Texas Baptists, an adjunct professor of theology, and a local teaching pastor, Dr. Layton Flowers.

0:23.4

Hello, my name is Layton Flowers, the director of apologetics for Texas Baptist. I wanted to respond to a link that was sent to me yesterday. I listened to it on

0:28.4

my drive home, and I wanted to address this from both perspectives, from the non-Calvinistic

0:33.7

traditional perspective, as well as addressing some of the Calvinistic beliefs, because James White here in this particular latest broadcast from the dividing line,

0:43.5

went over a meme that was put up on social media. And of course, this is kind of new to our

0:49.2

generation memes, even Twitter and all these kinds of things. It's even affecting our political process. It's

0:54.8

affecting our theology in some ways. And sometimes obviously meme theology is not the best way

1:00.5

to do theology. And the meme that you're about to see is, admittedly, even from my perspective,

1:06.4

offensive. And I don't think it's probably real healthy to have these kinds of back and forth. Memes can be funny, and I don't think it's probably real healthy to have these kinds of back and forth.

1:12.3

Memes can be funny and I don't, I'm not trying to say somebody sinning by creating a meme or

1:17.7

anything like that. Some of the memes that I've seen out there and I've even shared some

1:21.1

at times just because I thought they were funny. And I take myself and some of these theological jokes less seriously than other people do.

1:30.3

And so sometimes things can come across as more offensively than maybe they're even intended when put out on social media.

1:35.3

But when you start dealing with really motive issues, the death of children or rape or incest or all these horrible kind of heinous things which are really

1:46.4

inerrant questions within the theological debate with regard to theodicy and within the

1:51.1

Calvinism or Armenianism concepts of God's sovereignty and God's control and how did the how did sin

1:57.2

enter the world and who's really responsible for sin, who's responsible for faith

2:01.3

and the lack of thereof, all of those kinds of questions come to play in these theological

2:06.7

discussions. And therefore, when the outset are kind of looking into our theological bubble

2:12.2

where we're having these kind of interversity debates among ourselves, they can be kind of shocked by some of the things

2:18.7

that we throw out there and that sometimes are said among theologians when trying to make a
