The gunfight at the O.K. Corral is arguably the most famous shootout in all of American history.

On one side, you had Wyatt Earp, his brothers Morgan and Virgil,

and Doc Holiday, and on the other you had the Clantons, the McLauri brothers, and Billy Claiborne.

The entire fight lasted just 30 seconds. There was an estimated 30 shots fired in an extremely

close range, and once the smoke cleared, three men were dead. But what exactly caused things to erupt in such

a violent manner? Well, I think most people would just chalk it up to a simple case, good guys versus bad guys.

I mean, after all, the clans were aligned with the cowboys, a loose gang of killers, thieves, and

smugglers. And the Arabs, of course, represented law and order,

at least outwardly. So, yeah, the most casual observers, the shootout was just the inevitable

collision between outlaws and lawmen. But what I think a lot of people don't realize,

well, it's not even mentioned in movies like Tombstone, is that the Europe-Clantern feud

originated with a botched robbery some seven months prior.

You see, on March 15, 1881, there was an attempted stage holdup between the towns of Tombstone and Benson.

And thankfully, despite the driver and a passenger being killed, the guy writing shotgun did manage to fend off the bandits long enough to get everyone else's safety.
