In late January of 1882, Doc Holliday and Johnny Ringo came within mere seconds

of turning the streets of Tombstone into a slaughterhouse.

Story goes that Ringo approached Holiday and asked if he'd been talking about him.

To which Doc replied, well, I don't know, but if I have, it still goes.

Bystanders began to nervously step away as the two gumbans slowly inched their hands towards

the revolvers. And then, just as it seemed that all hell was about to break loose, acting police chief

Jim Flynn intervened and placed both of them into custody.

To quote historian Mark Lee Gardner, the Allen Street altercation became the greatest gunfight

that never was.

But the tension and fear of onlookers that day had been very real, mostly because of Doc's

supposed fatalism.

A Tombstone resident described Doc is a very hard character who carries his death warrant

with him at all times. He is dying of consumption, and he is correspondingly reckless.
