0:11.0	I'm Jeff Parrot. Do you see yourself clearly? For most of us the
0:17.6	default answer we have is yes of course. It's the factory setting of the
0:22.3	human heart for us to think that we see ourselves fully and accurately.
0:28.0	And yet time and time again, there's evidence to suggest that our confident self-awareness is not accurate.
0:36.1	You're probably familiar with the Dunning-Kruger effect, the human tendency to overestimate
0:41.4	our abilities in areas where we have limited skill.
0:45.2	There are other related tendencies observed by researchers though.
0:49.0	For instance, the egocentric bias reflects our instinct to not only rely on our own ability to perceive the world,
0:56.4	but also overemphasize our own importance.
1:00.8	Here's the point.
1:01.9	When smart people get together to examine how and why we think, their findings
1:06.9	don't encourage us to have high opinions of our self-perception. So back to the question we started with. Do you see yourself clearly? The Bible
1:17.9	invites us to ask this question in many ways in many places and one of them is in Psalm 53. This Psalm contains an ancient wisdom
1:27.0	that predates the observations of modern research, yet it also surpasses
1:31.9	scientific findings by helping us see more than just ourselves.
1:37.0	Before we explore the clarifying truth within Psalm 53, let's go to God in prayer.
1:48.0	Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of life and breath and thank you for your word. Jesus, help us abide in you as we engage with your truth.
1:52.0	Holy Spirit, we ask you to move in and through this time
1:56.2	in Psalm 53 and we pause to recognize our own need to not only see ourselves more clearly, but to see you and your heart more clearly
