Hello and welcome back to Sociology 101. Today we're going to be talking about the power of the word.

Many of you've heard the old phrase, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will

never hurt me. Anyone who knows anything about real life and how life works, anyone who's been

in ministry for any length of time, anyone who has done counseling knows that that is untrue.

Words can have a huge impact on us internally. So we're not just talking about

external words. We're talking about the internal impact that words can have, most especially the

very words of God. Because for some reason, throughout theological history, I think a theological

way of thinking has infected the way the

church understands God's word. And ultimately, what many theologians have come to believe is

that God has created the world in such a way that we can understand and believe lies, but we can't understand

and believe the truth of his word. Now, notice I said the truth of his word because, strangely

enough, we can understand and believe some truth, but just not divine inspired truth having to do

with our salvation. This is really a nonsensical way of thinking when you really begin to think about it,

when you really think of the implications of this worldview,

because ultimately it's saying you can believe basic truth like who was our first president

or some other historical fact or you can

believe all kinds of truth statements but what you can't believe is you can't believe the truth

statements that have to do with you being saved you can't really believe those things you can

believe the Quran you can believe the Quran so much so that you live

as a faithful Muslim for your entire adult life. You could even believe in it so much that you would

fly a jet plane into a building so as to get 72 virgins. I mean, you can absolutely believe

lies, but it's impossible by God's design, mind you, by the way God
