This week we're talking about divorce and how we can measure it.

India 1%, Vietnam 7%, Tajikistan 10%, Iran.

This is a recent tweet that went viral, which claims to outline divorce rates around the world.

Luxembourg 79%, Spain 85%, Portugal 94%.

ranked 33 countries and their supposed divorce rates from lowest to highest.

The lowest rate was for India, with a divorce rate of just 1%.

While Portugal ranked the highest, with a whopping 94%.

The tweet has had a huge 35 million views and thousands of comments,

but there's no source attached to these extraordinary numbers,

and the account hasn't responded to our requests for more information.

So we've taken it upon ourselves to investigate.

First of all, I think we should be clear what we are measuring.

When you hear a divorce rate of 50%, you probably think that means half of marriage is end and divorce.

But to get that kind of figure, you need to follow a marriage until it ends with either the death of one of the partners, or in divorce.
