I'm Dan Kovachvich of D.K. Pittsburgh Sports.

The club is, of course, playing right now against the Padres.

There was plenty of news beforehand, though,

to say the least. And that was the signing, the official signing, the complete signing,

not just a single report of the signing of Connor Griffin, to a nine-year, $140 million extension.

It's not as simple. It's not as cut and dried as it might seem. It's not something where

you go, oh, yeah, nine years as opposed to zero. And you think that this is like fantastic and he's going to be here, whatever, for life.

There's a lot more to it.

If anybody has technical questions about that, I'm here for that today.

But what really jumps out for me more than anything is the level of commitment

that was just made to a very valuable asset and for such a long period of time.

And what that tells me about ownership and ownership's belief in the future of the franchise and the future of Major League Baseball, I don't mean to make this more cosmic than it is.

He's a 19-year-old shortstop.

They signed him to a lot of money.

But there actually are a lot of other layers to this that, to be honest with you, I find fascinating because it says a lot that in an uncertain, maybe peak uncertain time for Major League Baseball's economics, its labor agreement,

that the most risk averse owner in the history of sports, pardon me here,

quite possibly, and Bob Nutting would say, yeah, yeah, let's do that.

Let's, after pinching pennies for all this time, after cutting so-and and so on the final day of the season

so that we could save 20 grand or something pitiful like that,
