So Ben Charrington was asked by D.K. Pittsburgh Sports a few weeks ago,

will the hitting coach that you hire continue to apply a passive approach to his

instruction to which the GM responded with a very long and very nothing answer.

So, the new hitting coach was asked by D.K. Pittsburgh Sports yesterday, now that he's here, if in fact he will also espouse a passive approach to hitting.

minor leagher in the pirate system going back about 10 years, also had, I don't know if you

want to call it a cup of coffee in Pittsburgh. He was up for the equivalent of a little less than half a season.

By all accounts, both back then when I covered him and since then, really good dude, well-liked,

respected for his, well, first and foremost, for his hitting, obviously he didn't stick in the majors,

but, you know, there's hitting in the minors, too, and he was able to do that.

But also for his professionalism.

So I don't want to be the wet blanket before he even starts, and I'll just say that, you know, the mind is wide open.

Let's see how he does.

And as I've been stressing throughout this process,

let's see how independent he is, because the sense that I continue to get is that he'll need

to be independent in order to be effective. Why? Because Charrington's ideas regarding hitting

are, well, they're just about as bad as the results themselves.

He has a vision that every hitter in existence should be peak Joey Votto, which sounds great if you're actually peak Joey Votto.
