Now I can safely say there were a lot of things I expected in arriving here in New York for your favorite hockey team's season opener.

I did not expect.

then the first empty-netter, and then Blake Lazot topped it off less than a minute later.

Arter Silovs stopped all 25 shots that he faced for his first regular season shutout

in the NHL. Both of the teenagers who made their respective debuts, Ben Kindle and Harrison Brunich, acquitted themselves,

Plenty well, Kindle really well, and the very best player on the rink for either side was Yvgeny Malkin.

And I say that with respect to everybody else I just mentioned

Gino was flying and Gino was efficient in all three zones, an absolute beast in the defensive

zone. I got to tell you, I'm not sure that anything jumped out to me more.

Well, a couple of things.

One was the manner in which the penguins executed the Dan Mews system.

What is the system?

Well, it's got lots of layers to it as any hockey system would.

But the best way to think of it, especially when you're watching it in its early stages,

is there are lots of numbers, and there are lots of numbers in important areas. So if it looked to you,

or more important, if it looked to the Rangers, like the penguins were in a constant state of having too many men on the ice,

it's because they moved as a group.

They moved more specifically as a trio, like a triangle.

You would see two guys go to the New York puck carrier.

You would see a third one wait in what would be the most likely spot for that puck to squirt out.
