German filmmaker Edward Berger is an Oscar contention, again, with his latest film Conclave, starring Ray Fines.

Two years ago, his Netflix film All Quiet on the Western Front, won seven BAFTAs and four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature. That's a pretty good

outcome for an NYU Film School grad who got a start years ago simply by approaching a

production company that had made a lot of movies he liked. I opened a phone book and I looked

26th Street, Chelsea, great. I'm going to rollerblade over there. And I knocked on the door. And this guy called

Anthony Bregman, who I'm making a movie with now, 25 years later, opened the door and said,

Who are you? And I said, I'm Eddie. I was wondering if you have a job. And he said,

oh yeah, come on in. Edward Berger talks about his internship at the indie production company,

Good Machine. And he sings the praises of Netflix, which he says was the only financier that would pay for a grim German-language film, like All Quiet on the Western Front.

So Disney.

Disney has released its latest earnings, and the news was pretty good.

You know, they had an upswing in the numbers that were important to watch, such as streaming

revenue, and the stock went up.

Yeah, the big headline is that the direct-to-consumer division, the streaming services,

generated $321 million profit in the quarter operating income, and they generated 4.4 million more

core subscribers to the services.
