Summary

On July 1, Bart and Krista Halderson decide to go to their lakeside cottage...at least that's what their son, Chandler, says. Six days later, the 23-year-old reports his parents as missing. An investigation ensues, and a series of lies are uncovered, lies that start long before Chandler Halderson says he parents went on a trip.

Halderson is now charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating and hiding a corpse, and giving false information to authorities. Police say Halderson killed his parents and dismembered their bodies after Bart and Krista discover their son's untruths.

Today, forensics expert Joseph Scott Morgan breaks down the gruesome details surrounding this case, including how police believe Halderson burned his parents' skulls in the fireplace.

1:10.0	Jackie, what can you tell us about this case today?
1:13.3	23 year old Chandler Halterson is charged with first degree intentional homicide mutilating and
1:20.4	hiding of corpse and giving false information to authorities. Now the tension between Halterson
1:26.4	and his parents began after it was discovered that he had been lying about a variety of things
1:32.4	including attending Madison Area Technical College. It was Halterson who first reported that his
1:37.8	parents were missing. He told the police that they had intended to spend the weekend at their
1:42.6	lakeside cottage but according to Chandler Halterson they did not return as expected. That
1:48.6	missing person report was made at approximately 1130 in the morning. He also told them that maybe
1:54.9	they decided to go to a casino. He said their phones were off or they had no reception or maybe they
2:00.4	were on a boat having some fun. What we find out is Bart and Christa Halterson are missing because
2:07.4	their son has murdered them and dismembered the bodies. Joe, there was so much deception in this case
2:16.0	and that really caused a problem with the investigation. When you have so many lies that are
2:21.1	being told, what do you do? How do you start an investigation like this? It's very difficult.
2:27.2	Jackie, when you begin to think about it, it's one of these things where
2:32.4	you, as an investigator, you begin to look at it and you see it's almost like fishing line that
2:37.7	gets tied in this massive knot. Some people call it a bird's nest and it's your job to go in there
