When Paul approached me, I googled him and it was like, oh, hell, he's been accused of everything. That's our friend author Vicky Petratis and the man she's talking about is our guest today, Paul Dale.

Although he is better known as disgraced former drug squad detective,

One of the things he's been accused of is organizing the murder of Melbourne

Underworld figure Carl Williams. That fact alone will have split our listeners

neatly into two camps. Some of you, those with

encyclopedic knowledge of Melbourne Gangland, like me frankly, will be

absolutely ready to go.

But others may need a little help with the context of our story today. This may be hard for some of you to believe,

but the first Underbelly TV series that dramatized the Melbourne Gang War was aired in 2008.

That's 12 years ago now, so a lot of you were too little to watch it. Now that I've depressed everyone else who remembers it very

clearly, think about this. It was a TV series about a violent gang war that was on TV

while the real violent gang war was still underway.
