Lewis.

Monday 3rd of December, 2001.

It was Dick Summers who'd seen Lewis Kennard and his mother and brother going into the police station.

He was the one who'd blabbed to Lewis's dad at the pub.

After his father had interrupted the interview, they all had to leave the station together in

Lewis's mum's car.

It's like he dick could drive me or you lot would still be in there, Lewis's dad said.

Not even his dad thought it was a good idea to drink and drive to the police station.

It didn't occur to Lewis to wonder why his father had come.

It was always where you least wanted him to be.

Simon whined when he couldn't sit in the front seat.

Lewis's father was silent as Lewis's mother drove over the dry field behind the police station,

shaking his head theatrically as she worked her way up the gears.

Lewis could smell booze.

Lewis's dad bounced in his seat, as if unable to contain himself for a second longer.

What is fucking wrong with this family?

Simon laughed his empty laugh again.

Lewis's mum said nothing.

They turned onto the main street.
