Let's pick up where we left off last time.

Sarah.

Monday, 3rd of December, 2001.

When Sarah pulled up to drop Ned off,

the main driveway to the hospital was blocked by two ambulances facing each other.

They'd had to stop a few more times for the old man to be sick.

I can walk from here, Ned said a little shakily as he stepped down from the cab.

I'll take your yute to the police station in Dirt and all right.

I'll leave the key there for you, Sarah said.

Ned nodded.

He'd gone grey about the face.

You can give them a ring and someone will come pick you up.

I'll just get a cab, he said.

Sarah wondered how many taxis there were in a town like this.

The nurse's station will have the number.

I'm sure someone can pick you up.

She could tell he wasn't going to do it, but he nodded and raised a hand.

Sarah turned out of the hospital car park and into a spot on the side of the road that someone was leaving.

As the engine powered down, the smell of dust and oil made Sarah think of things that were repaired, made whole.

And mobile started ringing.
