Summary

Sean Illing talks with author and Washington Post columnist Christine Emba about whether or not we need to rethink sex. They discuss why, according to the research and reporting in Emba's new book Rethinking Sex, many Americans are unhappy with the sex they're having, and don't fully understand what they want. They also talk about how her Catholic faith informs her views on sex, why it's necessary to expand on the framework of "consent," and what kind of sexual culture Emba hopes to see in the world. Do we need to rethink sex?

1:12.0

I'm Sean Elling, and I'm your host for Vox Conversations.

1:19.0

This is the question at the center of a new book by Christine Emba, a columnist at the Washington Post.

1:35.0

The title, naturally, is rethinking sex, a provocation.

1:40.0

And it's one of those books that's very hard to categorize. And Emba, as a thinker, doesn't fit neatly into any ideological boxes.

1:51.0

And that's a good thing. Her book is an attempt to answer a bunch of questions.

But the main one is something like this.

2:01.0

Why are so many young Americans so unhappy with their sex lives? Why are they, in her words, engaging in sexual encounters they don't really want for reasons they don't fully agree with?

2:16.0

Emba's answer is complicated. She thinks the sexual revolution or the sex positivity movement has turned sex into a morally neutral and often degrading transaction.

2:30.0

What I understand her to mean is that the price of sexual liberation has been a wide open dating culture that ironically enough has replaced old taboos with new taboos and made a lot of us especially women miserable.

2:46.0

There are parts of Emba's argument I agree with, and parts of it I don't. So I invited her on to the show to talk it through.

2:55.0

We discuss how her Catholic faith informs her views on sex, why she thinks consent isn't enough, and what kind of sexual culture she wants to see in the world.

Christine Emba, welcome to the show. Thanks so much for having me.
