Summary

President Trump appears dead set on joining Israel’s war with Iran. After a period of negotiations, Trump has now tweeted that he wants Iran’s “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!” The New York Times has a deep dive into his deliberations, and the findings are shocking. Trump is ready for war even though our own intelligence assessments don’t support the case for it. And incredibly, the Times reports, Trump was influenced on all this by what he saw on Fox News, which broadcast relentless imagery of Israel’s “genius” bombing of Iran. This led Trump to want “some credit for himself” for the attack, after which he “began hinting that he had played a bigger behind-the-scenes role in the war than people realized.” He then leaned more towards escalation. We talked to veteran national security hand Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, who has a great piece for Foreign Policy magazine on the situation. He explains why the case for war is so weak, how Trump is getting manipulated into it so easily, and what to expect as all this unfolds. Looking for More from the DSR Network? President Donald Trump looks like he's all set to take us to war with Iran.

After a period in which he seemed to want to negotiate with Iran, Trump has now tweeted that he wants Iran's unconditional surrender.

The New York Times has a deep dive into Trump's deliberations on this, if that's the right

word, and the findings are extraordinary. We're drifting into war with Iran, even though our

0:49.8

own intelligence assessments don't appear to support the case for it, and Trump was influenced in his

thinking on all this by what he saw on Fox News. Meanwhile, some prominent MAGA figures are

aggressively warning Trump against taking the plunge. Today we're really fortunate to be making

1:07.0

sense of all this with foreign policy veteran Matt Duss, who was a longtime advisor on the

1:12.1

Hill and is now executive vice president at the Center for International Policy. He has a great

1:17.2

new piece for Foreign Policy magazine on what's about to happen. Matt, thanks for coming on.

1:22.8

Thanks, Craig. Great to be here. So last week, Israel started bombing Iran's nuclear facilities and killing its senior leadership.

Trump seemed to want to try to negotiate with Iran, but all indications are that he and his senior team basically gave up on being able to stop Israel.

1:38.3

Now he's just tweeted that he wants Iran's unconditional surrender and tweeted that we know where exactly Iran's

leaders hiding. He's an easy target, but we are not going to kill him now. Matt, Trump is talking

1:51.9

about Israel and the United States as we. What happened over the last few weeks? What's the current

1:56.8

situation? Well, yeah, as you said, Trump more than seemed to want to cut a deal with the Iranians

2:03.3

over their nuclear program. He very much, you know, he was invested in this. He had his, you know,

2:07.8

his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who had engaged in multiple rounds of talks with the Iranian,

with Iranian negotiators. I think Trump famously announced these talks a few, a couple months ago in an

Oval Office meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, who seemed none too pleased about that
