Did David O. McKay, ninth president of the LDS Church, lose his testimony of the Book of Mormon?

That's the question we'll be discussing tonight. And believe it or not, there appears to be some evidence to support the idea.

Here's the name of tonight's show at Radio Free Mormon, episode 409. Today's date is July 25, 2025 that I'm recording

this. David O. McKay lost his testimony of the Book of Mormon, three question marks. This comes from a

book that was published five years ago in 2020 titled Writing Mormon History. It is a collection of essays by Mormon historians

collected and edited by Joseph Geisner. You can see the date there on the slide 2020. This is what

it says in the synopsis on Amazon. Every great book has a great backstory. Here, well-known

historians describe their journeys of writing books that have influenced our understanding of the Mormon past, offering an unprecedented glimpse into why they wrote these important works. Writing Mormon history is a must read for historians, students of history, scholars, and aspiring authors.

And the volumes contributors are, and then there's a long list of illustrious names, but the one

we're focusing on tonight is Gregory Prince, who most of you know and who probably needs

little to know introduction for most of you. So I'm going to make it

very quick. Who is Gregory Prince? We have to know who the characters are in this cast. And I'll

go through this very quickly so we can get to the point, the amazing and remarkable point of tonight's

show. Dr. Greg Prince is a dentist, a pathology researcher, and a Mormon historian, best known for his

books, Power from on High, the Development of Mormon Priesthood, David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern

Mormonism. I read that book. Actually, I read the first one, too. Leonard Arrington and the

writing of Mormon history, I read that one, and Gay Rights and the Mormon Church. I've read that one as well.

Here are copies of the covers of all four of those books. How were these books received?

Well, Great Prince has won a number of awards for his books. That's how good they are.

The McKay book, the one on David O. McKay, was the recipient of four prestigious awards, and the

Arrington book, the one about Leonard Arrington, received the Evans Biography Award. In 2023,

Prince was given the Leonard J. Arrington Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Mormon History

...
