Is it possible for a independent candidate to run for and succeed in becoming president of the United States?

A few key points on independent or third-party candidates who don't belong to the two

major political parties, Democrats and Republicans.

George Washington is considered the only president with no party affiliation. The last non-democrat

Republican candidate was Millard Fillmore from 1850 to 1853, and he was the last president

who was not a Democrat or Republican, but he was a member of the Whig Party.

The most successful independent run was done by Ross Perrault in 1992, where he won

19% of the popular vote, but received no electoral votes.

And the last third party electoral votes were received by candidate George Wallace in

1968, who ran for the American Independent Party, and he won 46 electoral votes. Today, in 2026, Diane Sayre has

declared her candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, and by the looks of it, that election is going to have a very crowded playing field, not only with

Democrats and Republicans, but there is quite a long list of independent candidates as well.

Diane is no stranger to politics, though. She knows what it takes to get on

the ballot. She has ran for the U.S. Senate in both 2022 and again in 2024 as an independent candidate.

She ran here in the state of New York where ballot access has been deliberately made nearly impossible by tripling the signature requirements. And Diane remains the only independent or minor party candidate

to successfully qualify in a statewide race, not once folks, but twice, through an all-volunteer

grassroots effort. And I just want to take a moment and, you know, focus in on that because I know what it's
