| 1:03.9 | comes from or supported by or inspired by a particular text that then I translated and published as a book called the Buddha |
| 1:13.0 | before Buddhism. And the idea of calling it the Buddha before Buddhism is something like |
| 1:26.2 | the Buddha's teaching before Buddhism |
| 1:29.9 | or the Buddha's teaching before it became Buddhist. |
| 1:37.5 | So with the idea that over time, maybe even his own lifetime, |
| 1:42.3 | but over time the teachings got more organized, more |
| 1:46.4 | systematized, more developed, more expanded, and the core simplicity of them sometimes got |
| 1:55.1 | lost. And the, but the earliest version of these teachings were really radical in many ways in going back |
| 2:08.1 | just to the central core of practice. |
| 2:11.2 | So the name of the text that I translated, the literal meaning in English is the book |
| 2:17.0 | of eights, which is a very uninspiring title. |
| 2:21.5 | And so I titled my translation and commentary on this ancient text, the Buddha before Buddhism. |
| 2:28.5 | So people would ask a question for themselves, what might have been the earliest teachings of the Buddha |
| 2:33.4 | before it became a religion? |
