| 0:12.0 | So we come to the end of the week focusing on appreciation as a foundation for compassion. |
| 0:22.0 | And there's one more element that I associate with appreciation that is inevitably invaluable. |
| 0:31.0 | And I'll introduce it this way that without there being love first, |
| 0:47.0 | I worry that compassion is not really compassion. |
| 0:53.0 | That love is a necessary component of compassion. |
| 1:04.0 | And I say that because of sometimes people feel an obligation to care for others. |
| 1:11.0 | They feel alarmed, they feel worried, they feel upset about suffering in the world, suffering in others. |
| 1:18.0 | They feel fear and relationship to it. |
| 1:21.0 | And they carry with them a strong sense of obligation like I'm supposed to, I need to. |
| 1:27.0 | Or a strong sense that I have to address this and deal with this because I'm so uncomfortable. |
| 1:35.0 | And they're addressing suffering, they're trying to bring that suffering to an end. |
| 1:42.0 | And so the actions can look like compassionate actions, but they're not informed by love. |
| 1:50.0 | They're not informed by a deep appreciation, valuing, understanding of others. |
| 1:57.0 | And these first four themes of this week. |
| 2:01.0 | I'd like to suggest they're also really necessary for healthy love. |
| 2:07.0 | That there's an appreciation of others, there's an understanding of them, there is a respect for them, |
| 2:16.0 | and there is a certain kind of acceptance of them. |
| 2:20.0 | And love without a healthy dosage of each of these can easily become skewed, can easily become problematic. |
| 2:29.0 | And there might be other important elements of love, but those four I think are really invaluable. |
| 2:38.0 | And it leads us to a kind of a healthy love. |
