Summary

On this episode, I discuss desvenlafaxine pharmacology, adverse effects, pharmacokinetics, and drug interactions.



Desvenlafaxine is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that can be used for depression.



Renal elimination is an important method of deactivation of desvenlafaxine. Dose adjustments may be recommended as renal function drops below 50 mls/min.



Withdrawal syndrome due is a risk with desvenlafaxine as it has a significantly short half-life.

All right, let's get into the drug of the day today, and that is Des Venlifaxine.

Brand name of this medication is Pristique, and the last part of that name may sound a little

bit familiar in that Venlofaxine I have covered previously.

So there's going to be a lot of tie-in and a lot of overlapping coverage here with this medication.

However, dosing is definitely different and there are a few quirks as far as metabolism and things too.

So it is classified as an antidepressant and, of course, an S-NRI.

So that's a serotonin and norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor.

So the use of this medication, where we have some evidence, certainly depression,

is why it was initially approved by the FDA, but also off-label use you may see is hot flashes,
