0:11.2	I'm Brandon Seal.
0:15.2	On January 26, 1840, representatives from the towns,
0:20.0	villas, and Pueblos of Coahuilaila, New Leone, and Tamolipas,
0:24.9	met at a little trading post called Casablanca on the southern shore of the Noisus River
0:29.3	and established a new government.
0:33.0	Antonio Canales was named commander-in-Chief of this government, and the fiery Jose
0:37.5	Maria Carbacal was selected as the General Secretary of the General Counsel, basically
0:42.6	the Secretary of State of this Republic of the Northern Border, or the Republic of the
0:48.2	Rio Grande, as Texian newspapers started to call it.
0:53.2	After celebrating this new government, Jose Maria Carbacal traveled to San
0:57.3	Antonio. He was going to try one more time to strike an alliance with the Republic of Texas,
1:03.0	which had already rebuffed him at least twice. But by this time, he was coming as the representative
1:08.9	of a separate, legitimate government, not just as a
1:12.4	partisan in a Mexican civil war.
1:15.6	Granted, his government was self-declared.
1:18.3	That's kind of all that a government really is anyway, a group of folks calling themselves
1:22.3	a government with an army to back it up.
1:25.6	And in the case of Karbal and the other Rio Grande Federalists, their army had even won
1:31.0	a battle since the last time they'd been to Texas, the Battle of Alcantra.
1:38.0	Carvajal's diplomatic mission also had one other thing going for it.
