Summary

It was the week when the Department of Justice fully embraced its new status as the corrupt, ruthless agent for Trump's endless retribution agenda. The president’s lieutenants in the department launched a legal barrage against Trump foes like Barack Obama, Adam Schiff, and New York AG Letitia James. We chronicle the steep descent with 3 DOJ experts: Kristy Greenberg, Perry Stein, and Glenn Thrush. Rough but essential listening. Plus: a special sidebar on the beleaguered Voting Rights Act. Courtside with Kristy Greenberg: https://www.youtube.com/@CourtsidewithKG/videos Glenn’s reporting: https://www.nytimes.com/by/glenn-thrush Perry’s reporting: https://www.washingtonpost.com/people/perry-stein/  Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to a special episode of Talking Feds.

As long time, listeners know, this podcast began with a special focus on federal criminal law enforcement,

0:17.9

and from our very first days, we have taped special episodes on the

0:22.3

Department of Justice every few months.

0:25.6

We weren't planning to do another DOJ report card episode this week, but then the department

0:32.0

undertook a flurry of actions, each of which is a corrupt gift rat present to Donald Trump and his bottomless

0:40.7

thirst for retribution against his perceived enemies. Just in the past week, news broke that DOJ

0:48.0

officials were putting together a grand jury to hear evidence against the Obama administration,

0:57.2

and were going after Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James for mortgage fraud. And we're subpoenaing James's office

1:04.0

with a possible eye toward charging her for, get this, violating Trump's civil rights by beating him in court. The wheels are now completely

1:15.0

off at the DOJ. As an investigative agency, it has become indistinguishable from the Ministry of

1:22.3

Justice of the Russian Federation or the Office of the Prosecutor General in Hungary, both undisguised

1:30.3

hit squads for their presidents. We can now only wonder whether the department will follow through

1:36.8

with a series of bogus prosecutions of former government and political officials, the likes of which have never been seen in the United States.

1:47.0

And the department's full embrace of its role as Trump's Avengers has implications for other political battles,

1:56.0

including the response to the new congressional subpoena to the Department for Jeffrey Epstein Records.

2:03.3

To try to make sense of a Department of Justice that daily seems to be undertaking more

2:08.7

dramatic transgressions from its lawful and traditional role, and to be transforming itself

2:15.4

into the nation's largest law firm dedicated to the political fortunes of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

2:23.5

We're really pleased to welcome three of the most knowledgeable commentators on the department in the country,

2:29.9

two of whom I'm really pleased to say are first-time guests on Talking Feds.

2:36.2

And they are.
