Summary

Today’s Scripture is: Mark 8:34–36 **Today's devotional is in response to listener requests.** This episode tackles one of the most misused phrases in all of scripture — and one that has caused real harm for a lot of people. We look at what Jesus was actually calling us toward, through the lens of psychology and the concept of the true and false self. We explore: -The difference between denying the false self and erasing your personhood -How fear-based identity forms — and why it's not the truest version of who you are -Why "take up your cross" is not an invitation to accept abuse, toxic relationships, or depression as God's will -Jesus as a model of strength, not smallness — and what that means for us To Go Deeper: Blog post: What Does It Really Mean to Deny Yourself Get the first 3 chapters free of The Best of You Episode 56: Am I Really Supposed to Die To Myself? Hey everyone, I'm Dr. Allison. Today's scripture offers us a wiser way of being human as we step into the day.

0:11.9

Some of the most confusing words in scripture are these. Deny yourself and take up your cross.

0:19.3

In fact, today's episode topic comes directly from several of you

0:22.3

who have written into requests topics, and I'm so glad you brought up this one, because it's one

0:26.7

I've thought a lot about. For many of us, those words have been interpreted as a call to disappear,

0:32.3

to ignore our own needs, to silence our emotions, to shrink in relationships, even with God. And if you grew up with

0:39.8

that interpretation, I want you to know you're not alone and you're not wrong that it has caused

0:43.9

harm. And I want to offer a different understanding today, one that I think is both more faithful

0:48.6

to the text and to the teachings of Jesus, and also more aligned with what we know about how

0:53.2

human beings actually heal and grow.

Today's scripture is Mark 8 34 through 36. Then Jesus called the crowd to him along with his

1:03.6

disciples and said, whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross

1:09.7

and follow me. For whoever wants to save

1:12.8

their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.

1:19.4

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

1:25.1

This is one of the most powerful passages in scripture. And before we dive into it, I want to talk about a concept from psychology that is really resonant to what Jesus is saying here. It's actually at the heart of my book, The Best of You. It's the idea of the true self and the false self. Most of us are familiar with the word ego, that part of us that is defended, performing,

1:45.8

managing how we appear to others. But underneath the ego, psychologist describes something

1:50.9

deeper, a true self. It's the place inside that is genuine, spontaneous, and alive. This is what I

1:58.7

think of as the truest version of our god-made selves, the Amago

2:02.4

Day, the image of God within us, the place within us that was created whole before things got

2:08.3

so messed up. And the parts of us that have learned to survive to protect, to function on the

2:13.4

surface, have also gotten disconnected from what I've called that true self, the spirit-led self,
