Summary

Today’s Scripture is: Psalm 27:10-14 This episode explores the psychology of attachment wounds through the lens of Psalm 27—one of scripture's most honest cries about being left behind. We explore: -what neuroscience tells us about how early attachment experiences literally shape brain architecture -why our nervous systems stay on alert long after the original wound, -how the psalmist's declaration speaks directly into that place. We also explore the research on prayer and the brain, and what it might mean for our nervous systems to slowly experience being held. Hey everyone, I'm Dr. Allison.

Today's scripture offers us a wiser way of being human as we step into the day.

This week, we're going to return a little more to the psychology side of this scripture and psychology integration work we're doing together.

And I want to take a moment to say, I've heard from a number of

0:21.5

you that these daily devotions have helped you reengage with Scripture again. And that means the

world to me to hear, because I do think there are so many ways in which scripture has been

0:31.2

weaponized and misused and understandably that can drive us away from it altogether. And that's a big

0:36.9

part of my hope for

0:37.8

these daily devotions. It's to create a space where scripture feels safe again, where the text

0:43.2

isn't a hammer but an open hand, where the ancient wisdom and what we're learning about the

human mind and heart aren't in competition, but are actually reinforcing each other. And I'm so

grateful you are on

this journey with me. So let's get into attachment. There are moments in life when the people

we most hoped would stay don't. Whether through loss, distance, or the ache of emotional

absence, something in us registers it deeply, not just emotionally, but physically. Today's scripture

1:12.8

is Psalm 27, 10 through 14. Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.

1:20.4

Teach me your way, Lord, lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to

1:26.6

the desire of my foes. For false witnesses

1:29.3

rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations. I remain confident of this. I will see the

goodness of the Lord and the land of the living. Wait for the Lord. Be strong and take heart and wait

for the Lord.

I want to start with a frame from psychology that I think illuminates this passage in a powerful way. For the last several decades, researchers have been studying what we call attachment theory,
