In a significant blow to their decades-long quest for freedom,

Eric and Lyle Menendez were both denied parole.

The decisions came late August after the California Parole Board evaluated each brother individually. Eric Menendez was denied parole by a two-person panel who based their decision off of the

brutality of the crime, as well as his multiple rule violations behind bars. A separate panel denied Lyle Menendez parole,

stating that they found signs that he still posed a risk to the public.

The brothers were convicted in 1996 for the shotgun murders of their parents,

Jose and Kitty Menendez.

They will be eligible to go before the board again in three years.
