Summary
Nine weeks ago, before the US-Israeli attack on Iran and subsequent reprisals, the intercontinental travel world looked very different. I’ve been talking to Laura Lindsay of Skyscanner – the platform where you can search for flights, hotels, car hire and package holidays.
“People do still want to get away,” she says. But their destination choices are changing, with western Europe and Morocco benefiting from a drop in demand for Dubai.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Corder. |
| 0:06.5 | It's Friday the 1st of May. |
| 0:08.7 | I happen to be at London St. Pancras International, the hub for Eurostar. |
| 0:14.5 | Now, what we weren't expecting back in February was that in May we would still be talking about massive problems to do |
| 0:23.6 | with the tragedy unfolding in the Gulf, which began, of course, when the US and Israel attacked |
| 0:30.1 | Iran and there were reprisals against the Gulf State. That has been dragging on for now nine |
| 0:37.4 | weeks, which has done an awful lot to destabilise |
| 0:41.8 | customer confidence. Travelers simply don't want, it seems, to sign up for many trips abroad. |
| 0:49.4 | Now, to see if that's just kind of anecdotal sense that I have, I want to talk to somebody who knows. |
| 0:56.6 | She is Laura Lindsay of SkyScanner, a website that I use probably even more than I should. |
| 1:03.5 | Laura, to just remind us what SkyScanter is, please. |
| 1:06.5 | Thanks, Simon. |
| 1:07.2 | So SkyScanner is a platform where you can search for flights, hotels, car hire and package holidays. And we bring together over 1,200 different providers from across the globe so that people can find the best option for them in amongst those holiday searches. |
| 1:21.5 | SkyScanner began as a flight comparison website, allowing you easily to compare fares. And I would guess that many of the |
| 1:28.0 | users, including me, that's still the main purpose of what we do. So from that point of view, |
| 1:34.3 | can you tell me what has happened to traveller behaviour over the past nine weeks since the 28th of |
| 1:41.7 | February? One of the main changes that we've seen is that what |
| 1:45.0 | we call booking horizon, so how far in advance people are looking to book their travel has shortened. |
| 1:50.0 | That's an indicator of consumer confidence. It means that we know that people do still want to get |
| 1:55.0 | away. We're seeing more people than last year looking to get away on our platform. But what |
| 2:00.0 | we're also seeing is that people are |
| 2:02.0 | wanting to see how the situation unfolds and their destination choices are changing. So there is a lot |
