In a special series for Crooked Conversations, contributors Julissa Arce and Grace Parra explore and celebrate the Latinx experience in the United States in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. In the first of four conversations, the hosts discuss the history of Latinos in the US and talk to Columbia University professor Ed Morales about the words that Latin-Americans use to define themselves. Then they are joined by spoken word artist Danyeli Rodriguez Del Orbe who shares her experience growing up Afro-Dominican in New York.

By 2045, white people in America will no longer be the majority.

Instead, Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and multiracial Americans will

And within that group, Latinos are poised to become 25% of the total population, the

majority minority, if you will.

But despite this Latino explosion, we remain an underrepresented group across the board,

from politics to entertainment, to sports and business, you'll find Latinos, but more

often than not, and smaller roles commensurate to our population.

We currently only make up 8.4% of Congress, 2.2% of Fortune 500 CEOs, and we are the most

underrepresented group in Hollywood, with a measly 2.7% of roles played by Latinos in

major movies, and about 6% of roles on television.

But what does it even mean that a demographic this big and this diverse is near majority

when we don't have any of the majority power?
