Four weeks from the release of this episode, Tuesday, November 7th, we'll be getting ready for the

0:04.9

Wolverines season opener at Chrysler Center. What's still a mystery now will still largely be a

0:10.6

mystery then, but that day will start to unpeel what this 2023, 24 Michigan men's basketball

0:17.2

season will look like. This week to help try to solve a few aspects of that mystery early, I welcome Dylan

0:23.5

Burkart of UM Hoops to the podcast, and I've long talked about here and on our radio

0:27.8

broadcasts about the work that Dylan has done and is continuing to do to cover Michigan

0:33.1

basketball.

0:33.9

But what his writing and research has taught me holistically is that even a full season's worth of data is still a pretty small sample all things considered.

1:13.1

Now, when you think about outcomes, the 2021 Big Ten championship team, what Michigan did there

1:17.7

probably wasn't the most likely outcome. That crew played their tails off, came together

1:22.1

through a ton of adversity in that bubble season, and was a brilliant basketball team that

1:26.5

came with an eyelash of the

1:28.0

final four. Last season's team boasted a ton of talent and much less success on the floor in the

1:34.6

win-loss column. And that team certainly was not playing out its most likely outcome either.

1:41.0

It's why Saudi Washington referred to last year as a season of missed opportunities.

1:45.5

It's why Phil Martelli has told me and others that trying to solve the puzzle that was

1:49.5

Michigan's late game issues last season was way up there on his summer to-do list.

1:54.8

Now, don't get me wrong. You can't earn trophies. You don't hang banners on percentiles and ranges or coulda, woulda, shouldas,
