Summary

Laura Modi had mastitis five days into motherhood— blistered and bleeding, fever raging—and when she finally turned to formula, she discovered the first ingredient was corn syrup. So, she did what any sleep-deprived new mom would do: she went down a 2 AM research rabbit hole and emerged determined to change an entire industry. In this first episode of our Women of Consequence series, Kelly talks with the co-founder and CEO of infant formula brand Bobbie about what happened during the 2022 formula shortage when she had 48 hours to decide between chasing growth or serving existing customer—and why she raised $70 million to buy a manufacturing facility even though less than 5% of manufacturers in this country are run by women. This is a story about being underestimated, trusting lived experience over spreadsheets, and understanding that when you're not just the CEO but also the customer, you're dangerous in the best possible way. This episode has been made possible by a grant from Ingeborg Initiatives, a social impact platform dedicated to improving maternal health and making it easier to raise a family. I'm Kelly Corrigan, and today I'm wondering what it takes to change an entire industry with Laura Modi.

This is the first episode in our Women of Consequence series, looking closely at the ways women navigate and reshape the world, made possible by a grant from

Ingaborg initiatives. Laura Modi is the co-founder and CEO of Bobby. It is the first female-founded

0:30.9

infant formula company in the United States, which Laura started after she had mastitis with her first child and discovered that

0:39.9

the number one ingredient in most baby formulas is corn syrup. So Laura went down what she calls a

0:48.4

mini PhD rabbit hole at 2 a.m. researching why the industry was dominated by two players, why standards hadn't been

0:56.3

updated since the 1980s, and why there was such a stark difference between feeding culture in

1:02.1

Europe versus the U.S. She raised nearly $100 million, bought a manufacturing facility, and during

1:09.6

the 2022 formula shortage, made the decision to serve

1:13.9

existing customers rather than chase growth. A choice she believes came from being a mother who

1:20.1

understands what it's like to have a screaming hungry baby on her hip. Today we talk about what

1:26.4

it means to be the only woman in the room, why being

1:28.7

underestimated can be an asset, and what insights caretakers have that lead to entirely new ways

1:35.8

of doing business. Here's my conversation with Laura Modi.

1:50.8

The place I want to start is with this recognition that new mothers are super vulnerable.

2:05.3

There's a lot of conflicting messaging and there's also a lot of internal noise, as I recall, from 20 some years ago, about whether your body is doing the things that a body, a beautiful female body, is supposed to be able to do effortlessly. And it is really

2:12.1

intense between like, like I had a friend who had a colicky baby and she just felt like a total

failure.

2:18.5

I myself had mastitis.

2:20.7

I used to hold babies in the NICU,

and I just saw these moms come in kind of hunched over
