Hello everyone and thank you for downloading this month's episode on the EM Clerkship podcast. This month, Isabelle got hit with yet another GI catastrophe, but I will say that she waited through that shit like a champ. And yes, pun intended. Today we are going to be talking about Clustridioides, diffisile, also known as C-DIF.

The fun part about these episodes is that I also learn a lot when I make them.

0:27.1

I basically end up doing miniature deep dives on clinical questions that have been bugging me on shift,

0:32.4

like, are anti-motility agents contraindicated in C-DIF?

0:36.4

Which, stay tuned for that answer.

0:38.5

But sometimes the funnier thing is realizing everything I've forgotten from medical school

0:42.8

since transitioning to the clinical realm. Like for today's episode, I was very surprised to realize

0:48.6

that Clostridium is actually a gram-positive bacteria. And I'm sure there are med students listening to this,

0:55.6

like, duh, did you ever even do sketchy micro? But alas, it does fade quickly, my friends.

1:15.6

A broker is different than an agent because they help you to shop around for different policies across multiple different agencies.

1:23.6

When I went with Pearson Ravits for my disability insurance, they offered me three different policies from three separate agencies and helped me discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each.

1:33.7

In doing this, I was able to decide on the policy that was best for me.

So let's get into the stinky truth of it all with C-Div colitis. As mentioned before,

1:55.9

claustridioides difficile is a gram-positive spore-forming bacteria that produces strong exotoxins. And these exotoxins

2:05.1

destroy the gut epithelium as well as the body's immune cells, and thus no bueno. It is an

2:11.1

infection that is transmitted fecal orally, which means it usually involves a failure of hand hygiene at

2:17.1

some point.

2:18.3

C. diffusile infection can occur in the absence of any risk factors.

2:24.3

However, the major risk factors to look out for are antibiotic use within the last 30 days,
