So we're going to talk about some particular examples from

early 20th century British political history that may be through an interesting light on what's happening now.

But we're just going to start with a broader conversation about this because you'll be aware

it's become almost a cliche of contemporary politics that various things that happen

are regularly described as unprecedented.

So we had unprecedented scenes in the House of Commons where everybody started screaming at each other.

The Supreme Court judgment was an unprecedented rebuke of a Prime Minister.

Politicians darkly intimating that if X or Y doesn't happen the people might rise up and riot

is described as unprecedented.

Some of this is and some of it isn't.

Some of it is unprecedented in our lifetime.
