Decades after she was strangled to death,

the trial for the accused killer of Deborah Lee Aetrops got underway in Washington County, Oregon. Her husband, Robert Atropes, was indicted by a grand

jury in 2023 for second-degree murder after the county's newly formed cold case unit,

re-examine forensic evidence, and witness testimony. The case had gone cold since Deborah was

killed in late November of 1988.

She was found strangled and stuffed in the trunk of her car. She was 30 years old.

From early on, police focused on her husband, Robert, as the primary suspect.

The couple had recently married but were quickly estranged with Deborah having a relationship with a coworker named James Pearson.

Pearson worked with police early on, but committed suicide the week before Robert Atrop's trial was originally set to begin in October of 2024. Pearson was supposed to testify.

The defense team questions the significance of a husband's DNA on his wife's clothing and says
