Hi, death, sex and money listeners. It's Anna. And this is a special summer treat for you that's a little different and very meta. There's a new podcast series out called The Turnaround and it's interviews with interviewers about how they interview. It's hosted by Jesse Thorne, who hosts the great show Bullseye and is the leader of all things at the

0:21.2

Maximum Fun Podcast Network. His guests on the turnaround have included Ira Glass, Errol

0:26.5

Morris, Jerry Springer, Audie Cornish, Mark Marin, Susan Orlean, Brooke Gladstone, and me. So we thought

0:33.5

we'd share that conversation with you. I talk about the history of the show, how I

0:38.2

prepare for interviews, what happens in the studio, and why the rest of the team is always

0:43.1

pushing for me to get more and more uncomfortable. And I also talk about maternity leave, because

0:48.7

when I taped this, I was on maternity leave. My daughter was just a few months old. I set up a microphone held her in my lap

0:56.6

and talked about interviewing. And the moments where she makes her presence known are some of my

1:01.1

very favorite. So here it is, Jesse Thorne interviewing me about interviewing. Anna Sale, welcome.

1:08.6

Thank you. Do you like that I said welcome because I have not actually, as of the time that we were recording this interview, named to this show.

1:16.8

It just felt hospitable. I wasn't judging.

1:19.6

If you have any good ideas, let me know.

1:21.5

So your show, Death, Sex, and Money, is a very particular kind of interview show.

1:30.1

And I thought I would ask you to describe it because it sounds like the kind of show that has a real tight, solid elevator pitch.

1:39.0

It does have a tight elevator pitch, but I think it's actually much broader than the way it sounds.

1:44.2

The idea for the show when I pitched it was I wanted to have an interview show where you

1:49.7

didn't skip over the actual meat of what I consider to be the things that actually drive our

1:55.9

decisions in life, and that is relationships, money, and the fact that we're all going to die. So it's a personal

2:03.7

interview show, but I try to make sure that we don't skip over those parts and that I focus on

2:09.9

those parts. Like if we're talking about a moment of career transition, I want to know how someone

2:14.8

supported themselves when they made a leap, or if they had a huge change in their life, how that changed their relationship, for example.

2:24.6

So that was the idea.
