This is the second part of the preface of Death in Houston High Society.

If you haven't listened to Part 1, much of the following won't make a lot of sense,

so we encourage you to do so before proceeding.

While the murder of Jacques Mosler isn't a Texas crime, the man was a Houston-based

businessman at the time of his death, and his wife Candy makes an appearance in the story

of the subject of this series, a man some call the Bluebeard of Houston.

Candy whether be Johnson met multi-millionaire businessman Jacques Mosler in the fall of 1948,

while soliciting donations for the New Orleans Grand Opera Company.

Jacques and Candy hid it off immediately and began a whirlwind romance.

They were married just six months later and settled down in a large mansion in an upscale

part of Houston, Texas.

For years, Candy and Jacques had a happy marriage.

They adopted four children who were orphaned in Chicago, Illinois, after they'd undergone

a set of horrific circumstances to put it lightly.

Jacques's finance business became more successful each year, but when a 19-year-old man named

Melvin Lane Powers, or Mel, came to town, everything came crashing down.

In 1961, Mel had gotten into a little trouble in Pontiac, Michigan, for scamming an elderly

widower out of thousands of dollars.

Mel, Candy's older sister's son, came to his aunt Candy's home in Houston to get straight

and stay out of trouble, but trouble instead followed him.
