This is a global player original podcast. It's three minutes after 10, a very good morning

indeed to you, and it is one of those happily rare days, or at least thankfully rare days, where we turn our attention to

something that is truly out of the ordinary and utterly hideous. I've been thinking a bit

in the last 24 hours about the word populism, for obvious reasons, I presume, because

of largely the extraordinary defeat of Victor Orban in Hungary.

And a bit like fascism. It's one of those words that is very difficult to pin down precisely.

I lean more towards the simplistic solutions to complicated questions as one neat interpretation of it. But it's also,

it's a sort of political playbook built upon the idea that everything is an opportunity.

So three little girls get murdered in hideous circumstances in Southport and a certain type of

politician, a populist politician without without even pausing for breath,

seeks to turn it into an opportunity to thump a personal drum of prejudice.

In the case of people like Nigel Farage, of course, it would be anti-refugee prejudice,

disseminating the lies of an alleged rapist in order to help incite people to attack refugee hotels, or rather buildings containing some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
