In today's program, my co-host energy expert, Todd Royal, and I will be discussing the main problems facing America's electric power grids.

We will also address where all this is going if these

problems are not fixed soon. Todd, in our last episode, we ended with you introducing the topic

of what's going wrong with the PJM electric power grid. So first of all, what exactly is the PJM

grid? And why is it important that it not fail?

Okay, so it's a great question.

So PJM, so this is, it's not a power company, and it does not own the power plants

himself.

What it is, they are the regional grid operator and the wholesale electricity market manager

for a large part of the eastern United States.

Think of Pennsylvania,

Virginia, Ohio, places like that. In plain English, PJM is the traffic controller for electricity.

It coordinates which power plants run. It manages the transmission reliability, you know, the power lines,

runs capacity auctions, how much electricity do we need, and make sure that electricity supply and demand that it stays balanced across its footprint. And so the footprint is

about 65 million people across 13 states. Wow, 65 million? And they are in a horrible,

and I mean horrible state right now. Wow. Is that right? Now, what is the, what is so horrible about it?

Okay. So right now, the United States grid is managed by the overall grid. It's the, it's

FERC, the Federal Electricity Reliability Council.

The watchdog is called NERC, a North American Energy Reliability Council.
