August 12, 1985 Japan Airlines Flight 123 aboing 747 SR takes off from Tokyo's

Haneda Airport at 612 pm with 524 people on board. It's scheduled for a quick

75 minute flight to Osaka about 240 miles away. 12 minutes after takeoff as

JAL123 climbs to its cruising altitude of 24,000 feet, two explosions are

filled on board. The crew declares an emergency and tries to return to Haneda, but

they find the plane's controls unresponsive. 32 minutes later the plane crashes

62 miles away from Haneda into Mount Osaka. 520 out of the 524 people on board

perish resulting in the deadliest single aircraft accident in aviation history.

We have a little more of a somber episode this week as compared to last week's episode.

All right, all right. So this plane Boeing 747, I'm sure, you know, even people who aren't

terribly familiar with planes can probably recognize it's up 747. It's like one of the big

planes got the four engines on it. It's got like the upstairs portion on the front of the plane.

Oh, it's the two, wait, the two stories. It's not the one that's two stories the whole way across.

That's the Airbus A3A. This is just on the front. It's got the second story.

I've always wanted to be on a two-story plane. You can make it happen.

Now with the 747, it's pretty much retired out of service now. The 747 had a very long career.
