Summary

There's of course quite a lot of interest in the Grateful Dead's 1990 catalog right now with the release of the Spring 90 box set. As I reflected upon that year, and on this month, I was led to choose this show for the next Deadpod. I've always loved this performance. It took place when I was still saddened by the loss of Brent Mydland and fearful for what would happen to the band, and it reaffirmed for me the power and sway of this music in a way words won't do justice. We'll listen to the second set next week which I find especially moving.. but this is a fine first set and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

0:06.5	A lot of talk going around lately, of course from about the
0:10.1	Byan's new release of the spring 1990 box set, but this week I'm going to go back to the fall of 1990
0:16.1	and to a show that is often overlooked in favor of shows that happened just a little week or so later.
0:23.3	This show took place on September the 11th, 1990 at the spectrum in Philadelphia,
0:27.4	Pennsylvania.
0:28.4	I recall it well because for me, when I first heard the tape of this show I was very excited and very pleased with what I
0:36.1	heard because it told me that the dead were back, that they were going to continue and
0:41.6	that I'm going to be able to hear Jerry play in a remarkable ways
0:44.9	again and that was not all that certain how that was going to play out in the fall
0:49.5	1990 after we lost Brent and the dead picked up the new keyboard as
0:53.4	Vincent Wellnick at the time. The original show reports out of Europe were not all
0:57.8	that good. It took a little bit for the band to get together, but I think this show
1:01.8	at the spectrum in Philly really demonstrated that
1:06.7	the band was firing on all cylinders and set them up really well for the shows to come at
1:12.2	Madison Square Garden.
1:13.2	At any rate, this show, we're going to hear the first set this week and the second set next week.

1:21.0	the greatest story ever told follows, a beautiful candy man, Queen Jane,
