Summary
It took me quite alot of consideration before I decided upon this week's Deadpod. There are a large number of great shows to choose from that took place in the latter part of June over the years, but I decided upon a show from one of my most favorite years - 1973. This show is from June 26th, 1973 the Seattle Center Arena, in Seattle Washington. This show has some issues - the first three songs come from an audience source and I hope you are patient as while the sound quality here is not pristine, the rest of the soundboard tape more than makes up for it. This first set beings with a relaxed and sprightly 'Casey Jones'.. a little different from the set-closing or encore versions you might be accustomed to,. but goes into a high energy 'Greatest Story Ever Told'. Weir shines on these as he does throughout the set. What follows is an amazing number of very well played standards.. highlights to my ears being the 'Jack Straw', the Deal, a wonderful 'China->Rider' and they stretch out their jamming chops on the set closing 'Playin' In The Band'.. just to warm us up for set 2, which we'll experience next week..
Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73) set 1 Casey Jones Greatest Story Ever Told Brown Eyed Women Jack Straw Box of Rain Deal Mexicali Blues You Ain't Woman Enough Row Jimmy The Race Is On China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Beat it on Down the Line Loser Playing in the Band I hope you enjoy this as much as I do!! | 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome the Dead Pod for June 24th 2016. This is a professor I'm so glad you could pick us up this week. This week I was toying with several different possibilities for this little bit of trepidation because the first few songs are from an audience source and |
| 0:25.3 | they don't sound as good as the soundboard source that exists for the rest of the |
| 0:29.7 | band of the show. Nevertheless I'm going to include those first few songs because the playing is so good and I'm |
| 0:36.7 | a completest at heart and I think you'll enjoy them. So don't give up on this if the sound in the first |
| 0:40.9 | couple songs is not as pristine as you're used to but this is a |
| 0:44.7 | beautiful show comes to us from Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, Washington, June 26, |
| 0:50.3 | 1973. This is a fat and happy first set. |
| 0:57.0 | Starts out with Casey Jones and the greatest story ever told. |
| 0:59.0 | We're is on fire here. |
| 1:01.0 | He does a great job. |
| 1:02.0 | Brown-eyed womens nicely played. Then we get |
| 1:05.2 | into the soundboard jackstraw a beautiful version of this. Phil does an unusual |
| 1:10.5 | mid-set box of rain. Then we go into Deal, Rockin as always, but 73, so it's a little bit |
| 1:16.2 | different sounding. Mexicali Blues follows, you ain't woman enough. Road Jimmy, the race is on, China Rider, beat it on down the line, |
| 1:25.0 | loser, and then they close a set with a tremendous playing in the band. |
| 1:29.4 | Phil and Jerry really trade some wonderful licks here. I think you'll really enjoy it and it sets up the |
| 1:35.6 | audience and ourselves for what is also a wonderful set to listen to next week. |
| 1:42.0 | So a long one as usual in 1973. |
| 1:45.1 | Hope you enjoy it. |
| 1:46.4 | Thanks so much for picking us up this week. |
| 1:49.1 | And for your support of the Dead Pot. |
| 1:50.6 | I couldn't bring this music to you without it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. |
