Summary

A energized show from 49 years ago highlights this week's Deadpod, from Winterland on May 30, 1971. We only have a partial second set from this Sunday night show but its in fine quality and the band is in top form for this period. The recording starts with a partial 'I Know You Rider' and you immediately wish the entire show survived. A fine 'Sugar Magnolia' follows, and then 'Cumberland Blues' rocks out. Pigpen makes himself known with a powerful 'Big Boss Man'. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Deal' follow, displaying the usual energy they were played during this time. 'Truckin' brings a big response from the crowd, but it leads into the highlight of the evening, a 15 minute plus 'Turn On Your Lovelight' that is pure Pigpen at his peak. 'Uncle John's Band' follows and then 'Casey Jones' closes out the set. A very energetic 'Johnny B Goode' ends the evening at must be well past the 2:00 AM curfew that Bill Graham warns us about following 'Lovelight'.

This was released on a limited edition vinyl record store day release in November 2012. However this comes from the Charlie Miller tapes.

0:09.2	This week we're going to bring you a show, well part of a show, the only part that exists in playable soundboard form, from the Winterland Arena in San Francisco, California, May the 30th, 1971.
0:20.0	It was a Sunday. We have the second set or most of it. Most of this was released on
0:26.7	vinyl as a record store day selection a few years back. However I'm going to use
0:32.2	the Charlie Miller tape so it's not the same thing.
0:35.1	This is going to include the first song that we have in this tape is, I Know You Rider.
0:40.8	We don't have China Cat Sunflower. We have most of I Know rideer. It's quite a good tape. The rest of this tape is really high quality. I know you rider. Sugar Magnolia follows in a great Cumberland blues. Me and my uncle, a hard charging deal, trucking, the
0:56.2	fans really love here on this one. And then the highlight of this set is about a 15 minute
1:01.0	turn on your love light. Pigpen does his usual preaching for this time period,
1:05.9	and it's quite entertaining and enjoyable.

1:10.3	During that time, right at the end of that, Bill Graham comes on stage.

1:19.0	Uncle John's band follows Casey Jones, and the encore is Johnny Be Good. So hope you enjoy this one. I think it was
1:25.6	quite worth playing even though we have part of the show because it shows the band as they are moving
1:30.8	towards their, they're really transitioning during 1971 into the tight outfit they'll be in 72 and this is a really a nice recording.
