Summary

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the early days of 1973, this one was played in St. Paul Minnesota. This was when they were figuring out the wall of sound, and the first part of set 1 suffers from several sound issues as they try to dial in the mix, most notably in a bad start with a 'Promised Land' that suffers greatly. Don't let that scare you off from the rest of this long set. There is plenty of outstanding renditions here, especially from 'Loose Lucy' on culminating in an excellent 'Playin In the Band' to close the set. A surprise is to hear 'He's Gone' in the second slot here..

Hello, I'm welcome Deadpod for the week of February 21st, 2025. This is a professor. I'm so glad

0:05.6

you can pick us up this week. This week I'm going to bring you a show from the early

0:10.2

part of the 1973 tour. This one takes place at St. Paul, Minnesota on February 17, 1973. It was a

0:19.2

Saturday night. We will hear a set one this week and set two next week.

0:23.6

As you're probably aware, this is when they were testing out and trying to perfect the wall of sound.

0:30.6

And while there wasn't a full-blown wall of sound set up here, I don't believe there was numerous sound problems, especially in set one. It starts off with a

0:38.8

ragged promised land. Be patient. It gets better. Following that, a surprise. He's gone in slot two

0:46.9

of set one. Sounds pretty good to me. Then it looks like rain where we're missing most of Garcia's

0:53.2

guitar here, but the band picks it up pretty well.

0:55.7

Again, that's a sound problem, I think.

0:58.0

Box of rain follows, wave that flag, always an interesting tune.

1:01.8

Mexicali blues, bird song played nicely, beat it on down the line.

1:05.8

Loose Lucy, me and Bobby McGee, a great Stella Blue, which unfortunately has a cut at the end.

1:10.2

El Paso, they love each other, and they close that one with a nice playing in the band,

1:15.2

quite long, about 15 minutes.

1:17.2

So, hope you enjoyed this one.

1:18.9

We'll bring you set two next week.

1:21.1

And as always, 73's fun to listen to.

1:23.5

I hope you enjoyed as much as I do.

1:25.2

So thanks for your support.

1:26.9

I couldn't do the Dead Pod without you, and I really appreciate it.

1:30.4
