Summary

Happy New Year!

... but this NYE set by the Dead should put you in the mood to say goodbye to 2024 and to ring in a brand new 2025...

This show occurred at an important turning point for the Dead, as they moved forward with many 'new' tunes and with Keith and Donna as members of the band (Donna makes her vocal debut here on 'One More Saturday Night').

The sound on this FM broadcast is generally very good and the band is tight. The boys play here with a great youthful enthusiasm.. They open with 'Dancin' In the Streets' which they wouldn't play again until June of 76.. This is a long and fun first set, clocking in at over 90 minutes.. Pig has some great moments here - Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle and Next Time You See Me are great..

All in all a great first set, we'll hear set 2 next week..

Hello, I'm welcome to Dead Pod for the week of December 27th, 2004. The last dead pod for

0:06.1

2004, as we say, adieu or good riddance to this year. And hello to 2025. So this week,

0:15.3

I'm going to bring you a New Year's Eve show. This one came at the end of a really critical

0:20.6

year for the band, 1971. So we're going to hear

0:23.8

from December 31st, 1971, New Year's Eve at Winterland in San Francisco, California. A very fine set

0:31.6

that the dead played on this night. Important in the band's history is they were really changing into from what they had been

0:41.2

into what they will become in 1972. The Gotchalks had taken their place in the band,

0:47.5

and in fact, Donna makes her vocal appearance in this show for the first time. So, Pigpen is getting less and less time

0:56.9

as he gets sicker and misses more time. And the band is, premieres a lot of, the band works a lot of new

1:05.6

tunes. You'll hear a lot of tunes here that were relatively new at the time. So anyway, a very fine first set starts out.

1:12.9

You can tell that there's quite a party going on and he starts out with an introduction and then

1:17.5

dancing in the streets, which they wouldn't play again until June of 76. Mr. Charlie follows,

1:23.5

brown-eyed women beat it on down the line. You win again. All these are fairly new tunes. Jack Straw, Sugarie. El Paso went to a fine Chinatown shuffle. Tennessee Jed, Mexicali Blues. China Rider is very nice. Jerry does a great solo here. Next time you see me. The pig is quite good on next time you see me.

1:45.0

And then they have playing the band, loser, and one more Saturday night where Donna does her trademark vocals in it for the first time.
