From CNN, I'm Charlie Drever with the five things you need to know for Thursday, August 14.

The presence of federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C. is being felt as President Donald

Trump's takeover of the city's police enters its fourth day.

Late yesterday evening, a CNN team saw multiple cars being pulled over in an area popular for bars and restaurants,

and at least one person being handcuffed and taken away by police.

It comes as the White House said there were 43 arrests on Tuesday night.

An administration official told CNN yesterday the National Guard's presence in the Capitol

would grow in the evening.

But as of midnight and into this morning, CNN hadn't seen a significantly higher presence

of guardsmen in busy areas.

A National Guard spokesperson said they're expecting to give more support to law enforcement

today, at metro stations and national memorials and monuments.

Meanwhile, Trump has suggested he'll ask Congress to keep the federalization of the police force in place for longer.

We're going to be asking for extensions on that, long-term extensions, because you can't have 30 days.
