While this action today is unsettling and unprecedented, I can't say that given some of the

rhetoric of the past, that we're totally surprised. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says

she's advocating for full statehood of the district.

After President Donald Trump announced he's placing the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control

and deploying the National Guard to crack down on crime.

However, Bowser says, this year, crime isn't just down from

2023. It's also down from 2019 before the pandemic.

And we're at a 30-year violent crime low.

Bowser also noted D.C. is not a state and therefore doesn't control the D.C. National Guard or have full autonomy.

The mayor says she's reached out to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who's now in charge of D.C. police, and hopes to meet with her soon,

adding that she sees nothing in Trump's executive order that changes the organizational structure of the DC police.
