0:07.0	The books of Nehemiah and Ezra used to be one long book chronicling the
0:16.7	return of the exiles after the Babylonian captivity. In Ezra we met the first
0:21.1	two rounds of leadership, Zerububibil and Joshua, and then we met
0:24.4	young Ezra. Today we meet another leader who comes along during the time of Ezra,
0:28.6	Niamaya. He is an Israelite official who works for the Persian government.
0:33.4	One thing we haven't dealt with so far is why there are so many Israelites still in Persia
0:37.6	after God commanded them to return to Jerusalem.
0:40.4	If they're Yawe-fearing Jews, why did they disobey God's orders?
0:44.0	Some scholars say people like Ezra and Nehemiah and even Mordecai
0:48.0	probably had no choice in the matter because they were servants of the Persian government
0:52.0	and could only do what was permitted.
0:53.2	If that's true, perhaps that's one reason why it was so important to have the King's
0:57.8	approval and support in returning to Israel.
1:00.0	Nia Maya has an inside track for getting the King's support because he isn't a prophet or a priest by trade he's a personal assistant to the king in addition to that he's a man of prayer

1:15.0	frequently quotes or reference a scripture which shows us that he knows God's
1:19.0	word. When we open today he's got a family member in town from Jerusalem and he asks how things are going.
1:24.7	Not well, it turns out. The people have been back in Jerusalem for almost a century and they haven't rebuilt the walls.
1:31.5	Nehemiah is distraught. He mourns and fast and
1:35.0	praise. He also quotes God back to God regarding the specific promises he made his
